With all visitors to the studio I send an email with all the basic info, including the address, the cost, what is included in their shoot.  A few years ago I put myself in my clients shoes and booked a family shoot for my family in a studio in Belfast.  This really opened my eyes to what each of my new clients go through, especially what we should all wear.  I was trying to visualise what the photos would be like without even being to see the studio.  I looked at the photographers previous work, I thought about what I wanted the photos for and visualised where I would put them in my house.  Outfits were chosen and we were off early on the day as I kept repeating to Matthew, “I hate when my clients arrive late so we will not be late”.

Their directions were great and we got their in great timing.  As soon as we entered the building we felt welcome and ready for a good family shoot.  I was really interested to see how their flow of work compared to mine.  The biggest difference was that they had 2 people, 1 for taking the photos and the other for general assistant work.  They worked in tandem and kept the kids well entertained.  I was watching and picking up ideas for my shoots to entertain and also certain set ups.  “Every day is a school day”.

The biggest part I learnt was that no question is silly for first time clients.  So I thought I would note down some questions I get asked and let you know how I work in my studio.  The most common question and biggest issue for every family is….

…what do we wear?

Firstly each studio or location photographer is different and shoots different styles so one style might not suit another.  When it comes to my style and studio I recommend plain clothing and matching colours.  I can’t help it I do love the traditional white top and jeans but this doesn’t always work, especially with a white background, it can be a bit over-powering.  I hate any clothing with characters or writing as kids are designed to move and so their clothes move with them and poor Peppa becomes a pink 1 eyed puddle.  Think pastel colours, plain dresses or matching trousers and similar coloured tops.  You can’t go wrong with them tips.

2. Can I bring the family dog?

Yes I am fine with the family dog coming to be part of the shoot.  I have 3 dogs myself and Holly is always in my kids photos as she is a big part of this family.  I just always ask if they can be kept on a lead as we do have dogs here who are very friendly but are not use to having other dogs at their house.  I also ask if the dogs are house-trained.  This I find to be an obvious stipulation but again we always need to check.

3. Can I bring a change of outfit?

Again this is a big yes as I love to see something fresh and different.  Although every family has to be prepared for circumstances changing and most toddlers hate an outfit change.  In my studio we roll with the punches and pick our battles.  When it comes to a 2 year old about to have a melt down we just avoid the new outfit and play on.

I hope this has covered a few issues but I am always happy to answer any other questions people may have so ask away.
